Course description:

Are you concerned or confused by the legal and ethical issues surrounding certain workplace practices such as being giving a 1099 for a temping job, not getting paid for working interviews, or the lack of lunch breaks? Have you heard about the new mandatory time off law? You are not alone. Laws can be difficult to understand, and misinformation is plentiful and can lead to workplace stress and burnout. Certain laws such as being classified as an independent contractor vs an employee can have legal implications for the practice. This course will help you understand the labor laws that impact your workplace and the dental office workplace.

Speakers:

GP Ramaswamy, is currently the Deputy General Counsel at the Illinois Department of Labor overseeing the administrative hearings unit and providing legal counsel to the Fair Labor Standards Division. He has worked for the State of Illinois since 2011 in a variety of roles including as an administrative law judge and as an investigator. He earned degrees from the University of Wisconsin and University of Minnesota Law School. He lives in Chicago with his wife, a teacher, and their 7-year-old twins.

Margaret Decker currently serves as the Chief of Staff for the Illinois Department of Labor, where she supports initiatives across the department aimed at protecting worker wages, welfare and working conditions. Previously, she worked for the City of Chicago Mayor’s Office on a variety of projects, including violence prevention and economic development. She holds a Master of Public Policy degree from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from the University of Michigan. In her free time, she enjoys reading, sewing, and walking along the lake with her dog.
